NTU Open House 2009 actor/actoress recruitment

Hello all NBS members!

NAAT Special Project Team 3 is putting together a short video for NTU Open House 2009 to showcase NBS Accounting and we really need your help to just say a line or two in the video!

Each actor/actress will appear for only 5 to 20 seconds and for certain segments, actors’ actress’s voices will NOT even be heard. Lines, if any, will be fed too.

We have scheduled 2 days (4 time slots) for filming

29/1 Thursday: 3.30pm to 4.30pm & 4.30 to 5.30pm (15 students)
9/2 Monday: 3.30pm to 4.30pm & 4.30 to 5.30pm (20 students)

Students to gather at the S4-B2 benches (near the staircase leading to the FAL)

For the 9/2 Monday filming, we will be re-enacting a AA202 Board Meeting so if any of you are able to bring a set of formal wear (collared shirt + skirt/pants), please let us know. And if any of you have a mike at home, please lend it us because we may need it to amplify the voices!

We welcome all NBS students to star in the video, NAAT or non-NAAT students! We'll be happy to answer any questions that you might have regarding the video/filming=) If you are unable to make it for all the time slots stated above, please do let us know too so that we can try to schedule another time slot.

Meeting for All NAAT Members on 6th Jan 2009

Dear all NAAT members,

There will be a meeting for all NAAT members on 6th Jan 2009 (Tue), 5.30pm @ LT7. We expect to end by 6.30pm.

The purpose of the meeting is as such:

1. Brief members on workplan for AY09/10 Semester 2
2. Encourage members to nominate themselves for the next main committee

1. What is Audit & Assurance?
Top

Audit & Assurance is an evaluation of an organization, system and process. They are performed to ascertain the validity and reliability of information, and also provide an assessment of a system's internal control.

The goal of an audit is to evaluate the organization/system based on work done on a test basis. Due to practical constraints, an audit seeks to provide only reasonable assurance that the statements are free from material error.

Hence, statistical sampling is often adopted in audits. In the case of financial audits, a set of financial statements are said to be true and fair when they are free from material misstatements - a concept influenced by both quantitative and qualitative factors.

2. Why is it important to engage an Audit & Assurance Service for my Society/Club?

It is crucial to engage an Audit & Assurance Service to review the Society’s/Club’s financial status, system processes and internal controls, and to test the effectiveness and efficiency of these components. It would also serve to increase accountability and transparency to its stakeholders and members.

3. Why should my Society/Club engage an independent auditor?
Top

An independent auditor represents a neutral and impartial party which would be deemed to have no interests in the Society/Club. This would ensure greater accountability and transparency when the audit commences.

4. What will my Society/Club gain out of this audit experience?
Top

After an audit is completed, the Society/Club will be able to develop a greater understanding on the handling of financial matters, preparation and presentation financial statements, a greater insight on the effectiveness and efficiency level of the Society’s/Club’s handling of financial related matters as well as an analytical perspective on the variances in the financial statement’s components. An auditor’s report on the financial statements and suggestions for improvements would also be presented to the management of the Society/Club.

5. When should my Society/Club engage an independent auditor?
Top

Your Society/Club should engage and appoint an independent auditor on (strongly recommended) or shortly after the first Annual General Meeting for the upcoming academic and financial year. The appointment of independent auditor should be announced during AGM. For instance, a society’s AGM is held on 23rd August 2008 for the academic year 2008/2009, the management should approach the independent auditor before this date, obtain a mutual agreement and announced the appointment during AGM.

6. What is an audit process like? Would it be too troublesome for my Society/Club?

The entire audit process is not troublesome at all. The whole process includes 3 phases. First phase include the proposal submission and approval where NAAT would submit a proposal based on the key audit areas and discuss the key issues with the management of the Society/Club. Second phase include audit fieldwork where auditors from NAAT will obtain the necessary documents and financial statements from the management. Third phase include the drafting and submission of final auditor report to the management. This entire audit process would be properly mapped out in a project time schedule to the mutual consent of both the Management and NAAT.

7. When will the audit process begin and end?

The audit process normally commences either in December, June or July. It will also normally end within the same month. The actual time schedule of the audit assignment will be discussed and agreed upon by both the Society’s/Club’s management and NAAT.

8. Why should my Society/Club engage NAAT as the independent auditor?
Top

As a student initiative, we are dedicated to provide the highest quality of Audit & Assurance service to all student organizations at the most affordable fees as possible. Thus, in our bid to raise the level of accountability and transparency among the student organizations, we are charging a lump sum fee of $10.00 for an audit assignment. The entire sum is used to print draft reports, audit working papers and final reports which are required for the audit process.

Prof Low is currently in the College of Business since 1994. He received his Bachelor degree in Accountancy from National University of Singapore and Ph.D. degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Prior to joining the university, he worked in the Singapore and Sydney office of one of the Big 4 firms. His research interests are judgment and decision making in accounting and auditing. He won the American Accounting Association's 2003 Outstanding Auditing Dissertation Award. His research work has been published in The Accounting Review and the Accounting Horizons.
